He was trained by the great catch-as-catch-can grappler Frank Gotch. Manjiro was trained in jujitsu…but found his fame and fortune as a grappler and pro wrestler. At 18 years old, Matsuda came to the United States for a better life. He was born Manjiro Matsuda in Japan in 1879.
